Catena Zapata Alta Chardonnay 2008
Wine AdvocateThere is one white wine among the higher-end new releases, the 2008 Alta Chardonnay. Light gold in color with an outstanding aromatic array of buttered popcorn, honeysuckle, mineral, and tropical fruits, on the palate it is medium-bodied, concentrated, impeccably balanced, and lengthy. This savory offering can be enjoyed over the next 5-6 years. I recently tasted the 2002 and it still drinks well but further aging is a gamble. The Alta Chardonnay's relatively modest price should put a scare into California and French Chardonnay producers who routinely charge double (or more) for similar quality.
Wine SpectatorRipe yet vibrant, with a solid core of yellow and green apple, pear and melon fruit backed by hints of spice, citrus zest and chalk on the tangy finish. Drink now. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 5,200 cases made.
Wine EnthusiastWaxy and warm, with peach, sweet ham, spice and vanilla aromas. As Catena Alta goes, this is not stellar. In fact, it's light on fruit and lacks the depth of flavor and punch you'd hope to see from a $34 wine. What you get is a fleshy, soft Chard with mild peach, papaya and melon flavors, and then a whack of finishing oak.
