Chateau de Saint Cosme Saint Joseph 2013

100% Serine (ancient Syrah). Fruity, or crunchy, would be good words to describe my Saint Joseph 2013. It is quite meaty too as we harvested it quite lately. Its « civilized austerity » makes it look like a Cornas wine. Like the Grenache grape in the southern Rhône, the Syrah is able to look very different in the northern Rhône depending on where it grows. The Rhône valley is a land of diversity. Tobacco, wild strawberry, toasted bread, cherry, leather. Bottled without any filtration.

Wine SpectatorThis has lots of pepper, bay and dried star anise flavors out front, followed by a good bramble-edged core of plum and blackberry fruit. The juicy, open finish has ample depth, and this should integrate with a touch more cellaring; the herbaceous notes may still be a bit much for some folks, though. Drink now through 2019. 670 cases made.

Wine AdvocateThe 2013 St Joseph also showed nicely. Giving up lots of floral and violet characteristics, with background dark fruits and minerality, it's medium-bodied, elegant and finesse-driven with bright acidity. It too should drink well for 7-8 years.
