Viader Vineyards Syrah 2001

SKU 27178

The Viader Syrah is a clonal blend of Australian Shiraz (Barossa) and Rhone Valley (Hermitage). It captures the spice and fruit concentration typically found in the Australian Shiraz, while maintaining the sleek and fragrant nuances more typical of the Rhône Valley Syrahs.

Wine EnthusiastDense and taut in acids and fresh tannins, a young, chewy wine with a good future, to judge from the muscularity. Black cherry, pepper and herbs are framed in plenty of new oak. Immature, but should age well. Try after 2008.

Wine SpectatorHigh-toned ripe fruit stretches to balsamic, which gives it a racy dimension but nearly stretches the flavors too far. Lots of ripe plum and prune notes, too, but altogether a distinctive style that some may find a bit extreme. Drink now through 2008. 675 cases made.
